In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, John Oates expressed uncertainty about returning to the stage alongside his longtime musical partner, Daryl Hall. The pandemic played a significant role in shaping Oates' perspective on performing. During the pandemic, the absence of private planes, arena shows, and even acoustic performances allowed him to step back and reevaluate his priorities. Oates says he found himself disinterested in continuing with the big band and elaborate production that had characterized their performances. Instead, he yearned for something different.
There's also a business dispute between the two musicians. Hall filed a legal claim to prevent Oates from selling his share of their joint business venture. According to Hall, the timing of the sale was deliberately aimed at impacting his tour with Todd Rundgren. Oates, on the other hand, claims ignorance about Hall's touring plans. He asserts that he doesn't follow Hall on social media and wasn't even aware of Hall's collaboration with Elvis Costello this summer until Rolling Stone informed him.
Despite the public drama, Oates characterizes the business dispute as "very boring." He emphasizes that disagreements are commonplace in business partnerships and remains optimistic that he and Hall will find a resolution. As Oates aptly puts it, "You never know what kind of curve life will throw you."
