The long-awaited return of The Beatles' film ‘Let It Be’ is set to grace screens once more, exclusively on Disney+ starting May 8th. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the film has been meticulously restored from the original 16mm negative by Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production. The restoration process also included a remastering of the sound using the innovative MAL de-mixing technology, which was previously developed for Jackson's own Get Back documentary in 2021.
Lindsay-Hogg reflected on the film's initial delay and its subsequent impact on audiences, noting that the film's release came at a time of heartbreak for Beatles fans, as it coincided with the band's breakup. This timing cast a shadow over the film, as viewers watched with a sense of finality, believing they would never again witness the joy of The Beatles performing together.
Peter Jackson, who had the privilege of delving into Lindsay-Hogg's outtakes for his ‘Get Back’ documentary, views ‘Let It Be’ as an essential piece of the puzzle, completing the narrative that began with his three-part series. Jackson regards the entirety of the footage and the two films as one comprehensive saga that has reached its conclusion after fifty years.
As of now, there has been no announcement regarding the potential release of the remastered ‘Let It Be’ on DVD or Blu-ray.
