Former Journey lead singer Steve Perry has re-worked the band’s 1986 hit “It Could Have Been You” with a new band The Effect. The re-imagined track has officially been released on all streaming platforms. The Effect features guitarist Trevor "Trev" Lukather, son of Toto's Steve Lukather and son-in-law of Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, and drummer Nic Collins, son of music legend Phil Collins.
Steve Perry reflected on the Journey album "Raised on Radio", released in 1986, and he singled out "It Could Have Been You" as a song he's always considered a diamond in the rough. Perry's connection with Trev Lukather dates to when Lukather was just nine years old. Lukather expressed his fondness for the track, prompting Perry to suggest he record it. When Lukather asked if Perry would lend his vocals to the recording, Steve said yes.
There’s no word on when (or if) Steve Perry will return to touring, but The Effect is gearing up for a busy schedule. The band is set to open for Billy Idol for five dates this month. Following their stint with Idol, they will head to Europe to open for Toto during their summer tour.
